Great Day at Roanoke

Kemper Knoll students Kathleen and Willow set off for Roanoke Valley Horse Show on Sunday 19.  Schooling started off a little rough as we had to work around water truck and course decoration interruptions.  But all ended well!  We schooled, they watered and decorated and no one was the worse for wear.

Monday at Roanoke dawned bright and cool-------------wait, did I use Roanoke and cool in the same sentence?  YES!!!  It was a beautiful, moderate, breezy June day in Roanoke.  It could not have been nicer and we all appreciated the weather.

Willow showed first in Large Ponies, her first foray into the large pony division with Daisy Duke.  And when they both settled into a good rhythm they were rewarded with a third place over fences!  Good work Willow and Daisy.  Gotta love those lead changes, huh Willow?!  I think Willow had a pretty good time.  I've heard her say that Roanoke is one of her favorite shows.

Next came Kathleen in the Special Children and Intermediate divisions.  Kathleen learned to deal with the slight uphill and downhill terrain at Roanoke, earning ribbons in nearly every class.  We were especially proud of her Equitation ribbon, as we have been working on this area of her riding.  Trusty Ben, her lovely grey gelding, was quite cooperative as she piloted him around the well-designed courses.  I think Kathleen may be a fan of the Roanoke Valley Show also!

Thanks to the parents of Kathleen and Willow for their support.  You all may this possible!

Kemper Knoll Camps Summer 2011

Hope your summer is starting out great!
Just wanted to update everyone on our three camp dates for 2011.

July 11-16:   Show Camp

This camp is designed for the horse show enthusiast.  During camp we will attend two shows.  Campers will learn the art of show grooming, including clipping, selecting proper show tack and tack maintenance.  Daily riding sessions will focus on technique, accuracy and dedication.  Developing your "eye" for spotting proper jump distances will be a main goal.  Coaching and transportation to and from each show is included in the camp fee.  Show fees are extra and will be remitted to each show attended.  We will also go on a field trip with a neighboring camp.  You will love this.  Enrollment is limited to 12 students.  The hours for this camp is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on home days, and horse show days will end when we return from show and care for the horses.
Cost :  $475 plus show fees

July 25-27:  Horse Management and Maintenance Camp

This camp is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This camp is designed to turn riders into horse persons,  What is the difference?  Riders can ride, but a well-rounded horseman or woman knows how to take care of their equine as well as ride it.  Focus will be on vaccinations, recognizing common illnesses and treating these ailments, recognizing lameness and returning the horse to health and soundness.  Wrapping instruction will cover bandages, polo wraps, travel wraps and support bandages.  We will learn to poultice legs , and soak and treat abscesses.  Each student will develop an equine emergency kit.  If you love your horse and want to keep him well, then this is the camp for you.  Upon successful completion of this camp, participants will receive a certificate documenting hours of training and areas of competence.  Enrollment is limited to 8 students.  Cost :  $225 plus emergency kit supplies

August 1-3:  Mini-Camp

This camp meets from 9 am to 1 pm and is a camp for beginner riders aged 6-14 years.  Activities will center around horses, horse care and riding.  Each day will feature riding, crafts, grooming, feeding and care.  This camp is designed to introduce young people to the safe enjoyment of horses, with emphasis on cooperative learning and skill building  Other activities include crafts and water games.  Enrollment is limited to 12 students.  Cost:  $200

These camps feature qualified instructors, several holding Masters Degrees in Education.  The head instructor, Darlene Kemper, has been in the horse industry for 30 years.  The Kemper Knoll horses are also professionals, safe and well-trained.

Come join us for a summer of fun and learning!!!!!

Kemper Cart Wheels

Kemper Knoll Farm proudly offers a new service for our customers.  Darlene recently purchased driving carts and miniature horses and is offering driving lessons in addition to riding lessons.  One of our minis, Dasher, worked hard today to provide entertainment at Mt. Olive Brethren Church's Bible School.  Dasher loves to pull her cart... but don't worry, she won't dash away while you are in it until you ask her to!  Dasher has made other appearances at the Harrisonburg area Farmer's Market and will also provide rides at the 2011 Ethiopian Heritage and Culture Camp at Massanetta Springs.

Great Beginnings 2011

Kemper Knoll Farm hosted it first Great Beginnings Horse Show of 2011 in May.  This series offers beginner riders, green horses, and new horse/rider combination a great opportunity to gain experience and confidence horse showing without the pressure and cost of attending a "rated" show.  Our class offerings are geared for this and include special classes, such as leadline and a sale horse class.

Ride for a Cure 2011

Kemper Knoll was proud to host our first ever Ride for the Cure last April.  Through the collective efforts of all the participants nearly $9,000.00 was raised for the American Cancer Society.  Thank you to all who helped plan, coordinate, ride, sponsor, and donate for this cause.

Our top junior fundraisers, Willow Goode, Lily Caricofe, and Joey Hoffman received embroidered saddle pads, courtesy of Judy Kite and Dover Saddlery.

We hope to see you at our 2012 Ride for a Cure.
